The Difference between DO and
  • We use “DO” when someone performs actions, repetitive tasks and obligations.

In other words, “DO” is often used when referring to work of any kind and referring to the action itself.

  • We use “MAKE” for creating or producing something, and for actions you choose to do..

In other words, “MAKE” is often used when referring to the result.

When do you use DO?

DO is used as follows:

DO is used when talking about work, jobs or tasks. Note, they do not produce any physical object.

Example:

  • Have you done your homework?
  • I have guests visiting tonight so I should start doing the housework now.
  • I wouldn’t like to do that job.

DO is used when we refer to activities in general without being specific. In these cases, we normally use words like thing, something, nothing, anything, everything etc.

Ex:

  • Hurry up! I’ve got things to do!
  • Don’t just stand there – do something!
  • Is there anything I can do to help you?

We sometimes use DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This is more common in informal spoken English:

Ex:

  • Do I need to do my hair? (do = brush or comb)
  • Have you done the dishes yet? (done = washed)
  • I’ll do the kitchen if you do the lawns (do = clean, do = mow)

How to Speak English Fluently like American Speakers in 1 Month – Part 1,2

When do you use MAKE?

Make is for producing, constructing, creating or building something new.

It is also used to indicate the origin of a product or the materials that are used to make something.

Ex:

  • His wedding ring is made of gold.
  • The house was made of adobe.
  • Wine is made from grapes.
  • The watches were made in Switzerland

We also use Make for producing an action or reaction:

Ex:

  • Onions make your eyes water.
  • You make me happy.
  • It’s not my fault. My brother made me do it!

You make before certain nouns about plans and decisions:

Ex:

  • He has made arrangements to finish work early.
  • They’re making plans for the weekend.
  • You need to make a decision right now.

We use Make with nouns about speaking and certain sounds:

Ex:

  • She made a nice comment about my dress.
  • The baby is asleep so don’t make any noise.
  • Can I use your phone to make a call?
  • Don’t make a promise that you cannot keep.

We use Make with Food, Drink and Meals:

  • made a cake for her birthday.
  • She made a cup of tea.
  • I must go now. I have to make dinner.

Compare Do and Make

A: You have to make a cake for Simon.

B: I’ll do it later.

Notice how in the response the verb DO is used. This is because the meaning is clear and to avoid saying “I’ll make it later.” which could sound repetitive.

Hi, everyone

Today we will reveal a big secret for mastering 4 English skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in a short time

Have you ever wondered that you have learnt English for a long time?. But you can not speak, listen, read and write. It’s due to the fact that you have not reached the right and suitable method.

So, Today, let’s follow us and we shall reveal the perfect way to master 4 skills in learning English. This method has already helped more than 1 million learners over the world.

How to Learn English effectively through short stories (Video & Ebook)

The big secret is:

Choosing a trustworthy source of learning English. Learning as deep as possible with 4 skills

The meaning of the secret:

Learn deeply to observe Language rather than Learn a lot without observation

——————–

Now, let’s get started!

Step 1: Choose a trust English source

Some sources that we want to suggest to you:

According to the method and in this video guideline, we shall choose the CNN student news as a source, of course, you can use VOA, or others source that you feel suitable (it depends on your level)

Why CNN student news?  Of course, there have lots of sources for learning English but I suggest you should take advantage of this channel because:

  • It’s the ten-minute American channel that consists of a variety of different and reliable news ranged from politics, sports to entertainment news.
  • Especially, it’s a commercial-free channel, produced by journalists and educators at CNN to provide middle and high school students a source of news program where you can find useful information with the standard accents of MC.

Note: Speakers of CNN channel speak quite quickly, it suits for Upper-intermediate to a higher level, We suggest the VOA channel for beginner level.

Step 2: How to learn 4 skills

As you know, the process of learning any language when we’re babies is that

Listening -> Speaking -> Reading -> Writing

So the question now is how to make use of this source to learn the above process: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with many topics on CNN news.

You must follow 4 steps (the process of learning language) that I mention to you below and check the result after one month. I’m sure it works.

Step 1&2: Listening & Reading skills:

  • Choose one topic you like and pick up the easiest one to start. At first, you should listen three to four times. Don’t care much if you can’t listen accurately or miss the words. Just to help you to be acquaintance with the pronunciation and intonation of the speaker. (For example: Refer to this post: Learning English words with Cnn Student News: Topic 1 – Volcano)
  • After listening, take the script of this dialogue, read out loud and slowly to remember how the word is pronounced and highlight as well look for the meaning of all the useful words includes collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs, “ the topic words”. You don’t need to remember all the words, just 5 words for each dialogue.
  • When you understand the words, listen again around 1-2 times to figure out the content of the dialogue

Step 3: Speaking skill:

After you understand the main ideas, it’s time for you to shine alone. Use topic words from the dialogue as “ keywords” to speak about that dialogue, but in your way.

Remember to record it yourself.

Step 4: Writing Skill:

At that time, you should rewrite the dialogue by using the topic words and the main ideas of the dialogue. Try to use your own grammar to paraphrase the essay and even develop the ideas deeper.

With one topic, you can practice 4 skills deeply, we’re sure that you shall remember the vocabulary about this topic for a long time.

REMEMBER TO LEARN DEEPLY TO OBSERVE LANGUAGE RATHER THAN LEARN A LOT WITHOUT OBSERVATION

Following all the steps in one month. You will feel the results apparently. Don’t hesitate to kick your ass and start now. Remember “ Practice makes perfect

English, to those who are not born speaking it already it is a very challenging language to learn to master. You may have already started the process learn the foundation and true basics, but then what about all these strange rules?

Why is the language not phonetic? This is impossible! Fear not because there are ways to improve your skills and learn English faster. Hello, my name is Helena, and in this post, I will show you some tips and techniques to help you improve your skills overall.

When learning to speak a language the first instinct is to find patterns, However, when it comes to the English language, you can forget that. Just throw it out the window. English is the language of the exception. What may apply in one situation may not apply to the next for example there is a rule in English that one uses simple present tense to talk about habits and general truths.

The way this rule is implemented properly is as follows: “She is a Girl.” “You want to improve your English every day.” In this case, the exception to the rule would be when speaking about a future action yet using simple present tense, for example, We have spelling and grammar quizzes next Thursday.

As you can see from the previous example you are using the simple present tense for events happening in the present and also for events that will happen! This makes the language difficult to learn because there is no way that you will automatically know to use the present tense except to learn about this exception and how it is implemented. So to be more efficient just try and understand that there are going to be exceptions to the general rules and it means that just because something sounds strange will not necessarily mean that it will be wrong.

Yes, English is a language of many exceptions to rules, however, because their exceptions do not mean that there will not be times where you can actually find a pattern that can help you improve your language skills. One type of situation where a pattern can be found is in asking and answering questions from people.

For example if someone asks: Where is the book? This means that you can begin by reversing and saying: The Book is…  Keeping this example in mind if you reverse the question that is being asked you will know how to begin to respond to that question.  This is something that can help you greatly in daily conversation.

When it comes to the language being constantly exposed to it is key to learning. Be sure that you are around those who are native speakers. If you do not know any native speakers then try to watch as much English programming as possible, this will help to improve your learning even more.

I hope you find these tips useful in mastering the English language.

Part 1: Improving Your Spoken English

1. Speak a little English every day.

The absolute best way to learn any new language is just to speak it. It doesn’t matter if you only know five English words or if you’re practically fluent — speaking English with another person is the fastest, most effective method of improving.

2. Work on your pronunciation.

Even if you have an acceptable grasp of the English language, with good grammar and an extensive vocabulary, native English speakers may find you very difficult to understand if you don’t work on your pronunciation.

3. Expand your vocabulary and use idiomatic phrases.

The wider your vocabulary and the more English phrases you learn, the easier speaking English will become.

4. Attend an English class or discussion group.

Another great way to incorporate some extra English conversation into your weekly routine is to sign up for a class of discussion group.

5. Carry a dictionary.

Carrying an English dictionary with you at all times (whether it’s an actual book or a phone app) can be very useful.

———————————————————

Part 2. Improving Your Writing, Reading and Listening Skills

1. Listen to English radio or podcasts.

One of the best ways to improve your English listening comprehension is to download English-language podcasts or radio apps on your phone or MP3 player.

2. Watch English movies and TV shows.

Another fun way to improve your listening comprehension is to watch English movies and TV shows.

  • Step 1: Watch an English movie
  • Step 2: Make an honest list of all the words that you thought were pronounced in a
    different way.
  • Step 3: By the end of the movie, if your list is small, your pronunciation is not so bad.
However, if your list is long, you need to work on pronouncing those words.
  • Step 4: If you are not sure about the pronunciation, use the help of Internet tools or
download a dictionary app on your phone to help with correct yourself.

3. Read an English book, newspaper or magazine.

Reading is an essential part of learning a new language, so don’t forget to practice!

4. Keep a diary in English.

Aside from reading and listening comprehension, you should also spend some time working on your written English.

5 .Find an English-speaking pen-pal.

Once your written language skills have improved, you could consider getting an English speaking pen-pal!

———————————————————

Part 3: Committing to Your New Language

1. Stay motivated.

When learning any new language, it is important to stay motivated and never give up on your goal of fluency.

2. Practice every day.

If you want to gain fluency quickly, you need to commit to practicing every day.

3. Train yourself to think in English.

One way to make the transition from being very good at English to being fluent is to train your brain to actually think in the English language.

4. Make friends with English speakers.

One of the greatest tests of a person’s fluency in a second language is to put them in a room with a bunch of native speakers and see if they can follow and contribute to the conversation.

5. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

The biggest obstacle that stands in the way of learning a new language is the fear of making mistakes.

The world currently has 373 million native English speakers, while the other 1.08 billion are non-native English speakers. Learning English as your second language can be tricky, like any different language.

However, there are various reasons why studying foreign languages is more important than ever, like English. It can help you open up job opportunities, boost your brain health, gain self-confidence through improving communication, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for other cultures. Because of this, we listed below some tips and tricks for improving your English skills.

We also reached out Jeninder Kaur, who is a school teacher at Burwood academy and an Educational Author at Parental Daily in Sydney to know her opinion about how students can improve their English skills.  She adds that “regular vocabulary exercises, reading newspaper, and consistent conversation both at school and with your friends are key methods to improve your language skills.” She also shares that learning phrases rather than single words can also immensely improve your english language skills.
