Sleep is one of the handfuls of life-sustaining tasks (like food and drinking water) that we only seem to think about once a year when resolutions have us overanalyzing our routines in search of fault lines.

What most people find is that they do not get nearly enough—experts recommend seven to eight hours a night. In addition, those of us who do log enough time in bed on a daily basis are not as concerned as we need to be about the quality of those hours. Tossing and turning, getting up for a drink of water (or to pee, or to read a text), or being awoken by an uncomfortable temperature (whether it be to throw the blankets off in a sweaty rage or shiver into another pair of socks), are all common nightly occurrences.

You will know when your body is running on a half-tank: Insufficient sleep for a short time may make you more irritable and moody.

Moreover, the long-term effects of sleep deprivation are serious: insulin resistance, hypertension, cardiac problems, to name a few.

Sure, during the week things pop up at work that push your gym session back, which means you have a dinner date with your DVR at 10 p.m., but you can catch up on the weekends. Right? Sorry to break it to you, but sleeping until noon on Saturday does not build up a sleep bank you can borrow from come Monday. You cannot make up for lost sleep—that makes it important to aim for at least seven hours of sleep every night.

Since you can’t always control the early morning meetings, 10 p.m. season finales, or weeknight happy hours that somehow leave you stumbling into a diner at 2 a.m., it’s time to focus on small changes you can make to your daily routine that will help facilitate better sleep quantity and quality.

1. Take the TV out of the bedroom.

Finish your Netflix marathon in the living room, and then head to bed. Televisions are a major cause of insufficient sleep. The blue light, which suppresses melatonin production, and stimulating nature of some programs make falling asleep difficult. Even worse, many that cannot stay asleep turn it back on in the middle of the night. Some of you may be able to sleep through a tornado—the dull buzz of early a.m. infomercials will not wake the beast. But if you’re someone who has trouble sleeping, computers, video games, and anything else that shines a bright light into the retina is going to take whatever melatonin your body is beginning to produce at night and destroy it.

2. Make the bedroom a no-work zone.

Your bedroom is made for two things only: sleep and sex. Once your mind is trained otherwise, it makes it difficult to sleep. Resolve that you will not bring work related material or thoughts into the bedroom. Who knows, your sleep quality and your sex life may see a boost.

3. Learn to trigger your relaxation response.

When you’re running around all day like a chicken with its head cut off—hit the gym, chug smoothie on way to work, last-minute presentation, scarf down lunch on way to meeting—you can’t expect the stress to magically disappear the minute your head hits the pillow. That is why it is important to teach your body to calm down by eliciting the relaxation response, either by practicing it during the day or before bedtime. There are many ways to elicit this calming response—progressive muscle relaxation; meditation and abdominal breathing—which is the antithesis of the stress response that so many of us unfortunately experience in the bedroom. If you practice these techniques, many studies have demonstrated that your sleep will improve. In fact, I incorporate it, as do many sleep specialists, into my insomnia therapy.

4. Exercise at least 30 minutes, five days per week.

If new year’s resolutions and the holiday 15 haven’t convinced you it’s time to hit the gym, maybe this will: Exercise increases the levels of a neurotransmitter BDNP (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which decreases anxiety levels and promotes better equality sleep. Plus, if you exercise outside during the day, especially in the morning, exposure to sunlight strengthens your circadian rhythms making it easier to sleep at night.

5. Upgrade your mattress.

Ever think it may be what you are lying on that is to blame for all of that tossing and turning? If it’s over five years old, it may be time for a new one. If you suffer with aches and pains in bed maybe it’s time to get rid of that box spring and consider one of the newer sleep number or memory foam mattresses.

6. Set a sleep-wake schedule.

Even on weekends and days off (which we know is easier said than done). One of the more common mistakes people make is to skimp on sleep during the workweek and then try to catch up on weekends. It does not work. Cognitive problems that arise from insufficient sleep are not reversed by the extra sleep, and you throw your circadian clock off by sleeping in. Because you slept until noon on Saturday, you will be wide-awake Sunday night—but that alarm clock is still ringing at six, and so the cycle continues.

7. Skip the afternoon coffee break.

When that mid-afternoon slump hits, reach for a healthy snack or glass of water instead of the espresso, which may be the reason you are have a hard time falling, and staying, asleep. What you might not realize is that the caffeine you have become so dependent on has become the cause of your sleep problems. If you are consuming more than two cups of coffee daily and especially after noon, you might want to consider that it may no longer be the solution but is now the problem. As if that wasn’t enough of a buzzkill, chocolate contains caffeine, too.

8 Most important Soft Skills You Need To Succeed in Life and Career

Having good skills for success at is essential people work and in life. These skills (also known as “soft skills” or “emotional intelligence”) can make all the difference. Here are a few you need to develop.

1. Active listening

Active listening involves listening very carefully to what the other person is saying without interrupting them. Then, taking your time to think and respond, rather than just answering as quickly as you can so you can say what you want to say.

2. A sense of humour

Humour is a great way of diffusing a tense situation. And being able to see the funny side of things can often help make the environment more pleasant and relaxed.

3. Empathy

Having an ability to relate to others and understand how they’re feeling is a key skill. Empathy allows you to create relationships. It can also give you an insight into people’s motives, which can help you predict responses.

4. Flexibility

It’s important to have opinions and ideas, but you also need to be able to respond to changes. When the situation transforms, you need to be able to adapt.

5. Persuasive powers

Knowing how to persuade people to do things is a key skill in life and business. This often involves having a clear idea of who you’re talking to and their specific needs. This will allow you to focus on any potential benefits for them.

6. Patience

No one likes a hothead, so it’s good to be able to keep a level head in stressful situations. The key to being patient is to wait and observe, and know when to act, rather than just jumping in without considering your options.

7. Knowing your audience

Knowing what, when and how to say something is critical; above all, it involves understanding exactly who you’re talking to. For example, if you’ve just been away on holiday while your colleagues have been stuck in the office, it probably isn’t a good idea to start talking about your two-week trip to the beach.

8. Body language

Body language makes up around 80% of the meaning in the messages we communicate. So, being aware of what your gestures, expressions and voice are actually saying can really help. And understanding other people’s body language may tell you what they’re really feeling or thinking. Start developing your people skills now. You need them!

The post How Did April 1 Become “April Fools’ Day”? first appeared on Helena Daily English.]]>

For pranksters and mischievous older siblings all around the world, April Fools’ Day, also called All Fools’ Day, is as eagerly anticipated as Christmas.

After all, what other holiday encourages you to think up practical jokes and fool’s errands, from swapping your spouse’s keys to tricking your friend into thinking their car got towed? (Not cool, Steve.)

But how did this odd, prank-centric holiday come to be celebrated in the first place, and why is it called April Fools’ Day?

Where did April Fools’ Day come from?

The true origins of April Fools’ Day remain unknown and are probably lost to history, but theories abound, of course.

One story goes that April Fools’ Day began with France’s 1564 Edict of Roussillon, which decreed that New Year’s Day, historically observed on Easter by Christians, was moved to January 1. Easter is a movable, lunar-based date but often falls in April, so it’s said that early adopters dubbed people celebrating the old New Year “April fools.”

Good one, guys.

Another theory suggests that April 1st became the fool’s holiday due to Geoffrey Chaucer’s 14th century collection, The Canterbury Tales, wherein Chaucer includes a playful reference to “32 March,” or April 1st. However, most scholars consider it to have been a mere copying error.

The holiday also shares some striking similarities to some ancient antecedents, though. The ancient Roman festival, Hilaria, was also a joyful, springtime festival held on or around March 25. Yes, the word hilarious is, aptly enough, related.

Another analog is Holi, a Hindu spring festival celebrated in late March during which people can forgive and forget past faults by throwing colored powder and water on one another.

Is it April Fool’s Day or April Fools’ Day?

Where does the apostrophe go? Originally, there was none! Problem solved.

The term April fool, for a victim of a prank on April Fools’ Day, dates back to the 1600s. Early records of the holiday from the 1700s name it April Fool Day, with an apostrophized April Fools’ Day recorded by the 1800s. This is also around when April fool came to refer to the trick itself.

Today, the holiday is stylized both as April Fool’s Day, emphasizing an April fool as a singular concept, and April Fools’ Day, indicating plural April fools, whether the people or the pranks.

And don’t forget to shout “April Fool!” when the prank is revealed.

April fools across the world

Yup, April Fools’ Day is celebrated all around the world. Because who doesn’t like playing a friendly prank on their loved ones? Here are some examples:

In France, the fooled party is called the poisson d’avril, which literally means “April fish.” France’s customary prank involves pinning a paper fish to a friend’s back.

In Scotland, April Fools’ Day was traditionally called Gowk Daygowk being another name for the cuckoo, a common symbol of the fool. Pranks continued into April 2, Tailie Day, when celebrants traditionally attach a “paper tail” (or a “kick me” sign) to their friends’ backs.

Brazil celebrates April 1 as Dia da Mentira, or “Lie Day,” in which people try to fool their loved ones. Always for comedic effect, of course.

YOGA can make you feel good both physically and
mentally. Here’s how.

1 Balance
Yoga can help with your sense of balance. There are all sorts of positions to help with this, such as Tree Pose where you have to stand on one leg.

2 Flexibility
Moving and stretching in new ways will make you more flexible. Over time, you’ll find you’re more flexible in your hamstrings, back, shoulders and hips.

3 Breathing
Deep breathing can help relax the body and mind. Yoga will teach you how to take deeper breaths, which calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

4 Strength
Many yoga poses require you to hold your body weight. For example, with
Downward Facing Dog you have to use your arms to support your body. These poses can help build your muscular strength.

5 Self-confidence
How you feel mentally depends a lot on how you feel physically. By practising yoga, you’ll feel good physically, which will make you feel happier and more confident too.

6 Strengthened back
These days, many people spend a lot of time sitting at a computer or driving a car. This can lead to back pain. However, yoga can help reduce and even prevent any backache.

7 Muscle tone
Many yoga poses and positions require you to use the muscles in your legs, arms, back and stomach. This will make them stronger; and in turn, you’ll start looking better too!

8 Reduced stress
Yoga will give you a rest from all the tension at work. As you’re concentrating on your breathing and body, you’ll forget all about your daily troubles

9 Calmness
Focusing on what your body is doing will bring a sense of calmness to your mind. Yoga also introduces you to meditation techniques, which will help you to relax.

10 Joint health

Merry Christmas in the United States

Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in the United States.  While many treasure the day for religious reasons, honoring December 25 as Jesus Christ’s birthday, it is also a joyous occasion for people of all religions and those who have no religion at all. The reasons for celebrating the Christmas holidays in the U.S. are as diverse as the people who celebrate them.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the two most prominent days of the holidays.  Many families get together on Christmas Eve night or on Christmas Day to share a meal that generally consists of ham or turkey as the traditional main dish.  Desserts, like pecan pie and cakes, are plentiful as well.

Along with being a time to reflect on spiritual values, Christmas typically involves exchanging gifts.  In addition, Santa Clause is a big deal.  Santa is a fictional chubby man with a white beard and a red velvet suit who hails from the North Pole where he lives with his wife and elves who make toys all year.  On Christmas Eve night, Santa hops aboard his sleigh that is guided by his reindeers to deliver presents to all the good boys and girls in the world.  In reality, presents are placed under the Christmas tree by the children’s parents.

Most places of business are closed on Christmas Day in the United States.  A few stores stay open to accommodate grocery needs.  Many businesses give their employees several days or a week off work for Christmas.  It is common for people to go see their relatives during the holidays, all gathering at a central location, usually in a home.

Christmas is a huge event in the United States.  It is something that is generally planned for all year long by businesses, retail stores, and by individuals. It is a time of symbolic items like Christmas trees, twinkling lights, and mistletoe and sentimental feelings like love and joy.

“Merry Christmas,” is the most common greeting during the holidays. On Christmas Day all around the U.S., most people are exactly that…merry.
