How to Pronounce English Correctly | The Exaggeration Method.

Hi everyone,

First of all, when we speak, we often mispronounce the words or even the sentences.
It may come from your old habit, with wrong pronunciation you used to learn, hence, your brain keeps telling you to say that words repeatedly in wrong pronunciation or missing sound.

For example, a lot of students say purpose [‘pə:pouz] instead of the correct sound [‘pə:pəs] or adding “h” sound for vehicle[‘vi:hikl] instead of /ˈviːɪk(ə)l/

Hence, to avoid those mistakes, we should learn all the basic correct sounds in English through some clips first to know how exactly the words are pronounced and keeps repeating the words as much as possible, not only speak the words separately but also speak them in a full sentence. It also helps you to remember the word effectively in both speaking and using the words.

However, this method will take you much time to practice, then you should combine this method with the other one.

It’s the exaggeration method.

It means that you exaggerate the difficult sound in the words because when you hear the different sounds if the sounds are similar, your brain tends to perceive this sound as the same.

So it’s very hard for you to distinguish. For instance, you may confuse when speaking” ship” and “Sheep, “ food” and “ foot”, “teeth” and “teach” or mispronounce the word “library” into [‘laibəri] and “program” into [´pougræm].

Hence, when you exaggerate the pronunciation of the word, you will know how exactly the number sound of the word is. Along with this method, another way for you is to listen to those words right after listen the first one, which makes it easier for you to distinguish the difficult sounds because they often speak slowly and stress how these words are pronounced differently. Here are some examples:

Bit | Beat
Fit | Feet
Six | Seek
sit | Seat

This exercise, tells you about the difference between[ i] and[i:] sound.

The first advantage is that you can acknowledge all the words pronounced in pair of different sounds, then reducing the habit of pronouncing those words in the same way.

Secondly, when you do such exercises, they tend to exaggerate the two sounds, which helps you to distinguish better.
Frankly, this method is really useful and I have applied this when I start focusing on learning how to speak English correctly. So now it’s time for you to kick your butt and start learning English.
